CHRISTOPHER LEE BATTLE

Christopher Lee Battle, 45, of Alexandria, VA, a beloved husband, father and son passed into Heaven on August 8, 2013 with his family by his side. Chris was born in Wichita, KS and raised in Orlando, Florida; but, counted Savannah, GA, where all of his extended family lives, as his home town. Chris graduated from Lake Brantley H.S. in Orlando, FL in 1986, before moving on to the University of Arkansas where he received both a B.A. in English and an M.A. in History.

Chris began his successful professional career as a political reporter for the Northwest Arkansas Times before entering public service and moving to Washington D.C. as a top aide to Congressman Asa Hutchison R-AR who would later become Congressional House Manager of the Bill Clinton recall, thrusting Chris into the national spotlight. An opportunity to resume his love for writing brought Chris back to Arkansas in 2000 where he served as an editorial writer for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. But, as with many Americans, the attacks of 9/11 struck deeply in his core and he returned to public service in the months thereafter working in several important government positions. Chris served as head of Congressional and Public Affairs for the Drug Enforcement Agency DEA, before being chosen by the Bush Administration to help start up the fledging Department of Homeland Security, where he ultimately served as Chief-of-Staff for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, helping to oversee the enhanced security of our nation's borders. He then returned to Arkansas to manage Asa Hutchison's unsuccessful run for Governor of Arkansas. Most recently, Chris served as a partner in one of Washington's top public affairs firms, The Adfero Group. But he never strayed far from his gift for writing and his love of storytelling, and he touched thousands as he chronicled with great humor and tremendous courage, his battle with kidney cancer over the last five years. His well-read blog, www.kidneycancerchronicles.com that he founded with his loving wife Dena not only detailed their own journey, but ultimately served as an information resource for kidney cancer patients and families around the world.

Christopher is survived by his wife, Dena, 39, and his two beautiful daughters, Katherine, 9, and Josephine, 4, as well as his parents, Joseph Anthony Tony and Linda Battle of Savannah, GA and two brothers, Michael and Dawn Battle of Fort Worth, TX, and Patrick and Cheryl Battle of Orlando, FL and many aunts, uncles cousins, nephews and nieces throughout the Savannah area. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, State Representative Joseph A. Battle, Jr. and Edna Battle, his maternal grandparents, Durell and Virgin Mary Donaldson and two uncles, John Battle and Lee Donaldson.

A memorial service for all friends and family will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at White Bluff United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. John Haney and Father Frank Logue. After the memorial, a reception will be held for friends and family at the Forest Lakes Community Clubhouse, 402 Forest Lakes Dr., Forest Lakes Subdivision, Godley Station, Pooler, GA.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in honor of Christopher Battle to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center to continue Dr. Hans Hammers' research efforts to find a cure for kidney cancer. The apple does not fall from the tree. When you have 'class' parents and a class upbringing, you will have class also. Not right that our children should go help prepare a place for us in heaven. But you know now you will all have a beautiful place prepared for you. We're sorry for your loss but God knows best. Our prayers are with ya'll, Bart & Lynn
